iPads in science education

iPads in science education is about more than clever apps

There are numerous science apps available for Android, iPad and tablet devices, which can help to explain many complex scientific concepts in a way that has traditionally been difficult to teach. But tablet devices are not only useful as a tool for scientific simulations, they also provide teachers with new opportunities to teach practical science and in doing so, demonstrate how the subject relates to the world outside the classroom!

IDS Education, in partnership with Vernier, has a number of accessories designed specifically for tablet devices that help bring science lessons to life and are a sure way of capturing the attention of even the most underwhelmed pupils.

One such set of products is the Go Wireless range, which utilises the most modern Bluetooth technology to offer a very easy and convenient method of data logging directly onto your tablet device. Collected data can be viewed via the Go Wireless app or for more detailed analysis, through Vernier’s award-winning Graphical Analysis software. This allows students to create graphs, tables, FFTs and histograms, in addition to calculating statistics, tangents and integrals, among many other things.

By connecting wirelessly to your device there is no requirement to buy an interface, thereby freeing up funds to purchase other exciting equipment such as sensors and probes, to support innovative teaching.

Another approach is the Vernier Connected Science System.  Through this, data from any Vernier Labquest interface or computer running Logger Pro software can be shared wirelessly between a full class using any handheld iPad or Android device. The collected and stored data can then be viewed by each individual student on their own device. This is also compatible with students own tablet or smartphone devices from home and therefore would work well to support Bring Your Own Device schemes (BYOD).

By utilising Vernier’s latest technology and accessories for tablet devices, data logging has become very easy and accessible and brings real-world technology into the classroom, maximising student engagement while simultaneously minimising costs!
