OCR Examinations

OCR offers schools a broad selection of carefully developed GCSE science specifications. We are confident that OCR Science GCSEs, which were tried and tested in the three years leading up to their release in September 2006, prepare all students for life in the 21st century, as well as preparing future scientists for their studies at A Level and beyond.

The OCR science suites comprise:

OCR Twenty First Century Science

The content of this suite is based on a project devised by the University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG) and the Nuffield Curriculum Centre as part of a QCA project on Science for the 21st Century. GCSEs in Science, Additional Science and Additional Applied Science have all been tried and tested with a wide range of schools and colleges during a three-year pilot study.

The following six specifications are available:

• GCSE Science

• GCSE Additional Science

• GCSE Additional Applied Science

• GCSE Biology

• GCSE Chemistry

• GCSE Physics.

OCR Gateway Science

A separate three-year pilot study based on materials developed by OCR led to the development of Gateway GCSE Science. The Gateway Science suite focuses on science explanations in familiar teaching contexts through a complete range of specifications:

• GCSE Science

• GCSE Additional Science

• GCSE Biology

• GCSE Chemistry

• GCSE Physics.

OCR Environmental and Land-based Science

This is a wholly e-assessed qualification which is set in the context of Environmental and Land-Based Science. While it is a very practical course, a choice of units means that it can be used by both urban and rural schools. It encourages students to relate their experiences in the classroom, laboratory and in the field to a variety of vocational opportunities.

GCSE Applied Science (Double Award)

This GCSE offers an integrated, project-based approach, encouraging participation in vocationally related learning and provides experience of science in workplace environments.

OCR Nationals in Science

Developed in consultation with Sector Skills Councils, these are flexible, vocationally related qualifications. They provide opportunities for individuals to gain underpinning knowledge and skills to support entry into work or further studies. They provide a different approach to the GCSE Applied Science (Double Award) and can be used as an alternative to the GNVQ in Science.
