Beat the Flood… an exciting new STEM challenge from Practical Action
Suitable for KS2-3 (age 7-14) pupils use their STEM skills to help them design and build a model of a flood- proof house. Activities to help them with their design include testing materials (for strength and absorbency) and structures.
Set on a fictitious island coping with the devastating effects of flooding caused by climate change Beat the Flood is perfect for STEM and science clubs, curriculum enrichment days, and providing a great context for science and D & T lessons.
All material to support delivery of the challenge including PowerPoint, teacher’s notes, pupil worksheets, certificates and a poster are freely available online. Printed posters will be sent upon request.
The challenge can be used to gain a CREST Discovery (secondary) or CREST Investigators (primary) award and entered into Practical Action’s competition, which has prizes of £250 for winning schools and £25 vouchers and wind up radios for pupils
