Exploring electrolysis

Subject(s): Chemistry

Resources included: Student sheet

Time: 25 minutes

Target age range: 11-14.

Electrolysis is used to break down substances. Explore the process by building a circuit with simple materials and make sodium hydroxide; one of the most used ingredients in making medicines.

As part of our STEM at home series, we have created some fun, hands-on experiments to engage young people in STEM. They can be completed at home or in school, encouraging students to become lab scientists for the day. As well as including step-by-step instructions and easy to follow diagrams, all can be completed in under 30 minutes with little equipment.

Parental or teacher supervision is advised.
