The Smallpeice Trust is an independent educational charity that promotes engineering, science, technology, and maths careers to young people. Core activities include running four-day courses for students in Years 9 – 12 (aged 13-17). Taking place around the school holidays at universities across the country, students have the choice of over 30 different courses, with activities to develop their skills in creativity, design and teamwork. Subjects include biomedical engineering, electronic engineering, low carbon energy, marine technology, materials technology, mining & minerals, nanotechnology, nuclear engineering, sports materials and supercomputing.
As well as running the residential courses, the Trust also visits schools for short half or full day introductory sessions designed for Year 8 and 9 students (12 to 14 year olds) to enhance their understanding of, and aptitude for, problem solving, creativity, design, and engineering. These STEM Days are easy to organise, inspiring and fun for everyone taking part.
Groups of up to 50 students work together in small teams on ‘design and make’ projects to improve their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. We will work with teachers to decide on the most suitable project. For students in the process of choosing Key Stage 4 options, these STEM day activities are especially geared to run as a complement to the National Curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
